Deming perfectly summarizes the need for innovation and change in the cleaning industry in the following quote. “It’s not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.” The patent for the first mop handle was issued in 1837. The interesting thing is not that it was patented in 1837 but that it is still in use in many facilities today. Not necessarily because better tools have not been made available but because change is hard and housekeeping departments have had the luxury of flying under the radar. That is no longer the case.
